Lycan’s Spire (Landmark)
Location: Any town or village
Lycan’s Spire is a tall limestone obelisk that has been constructed in the center of the town square. It was built recently to stop lycanthropes from turning nearby, putting a stop to a series of attacks that had previously plagued the village. Villagers are very pleased with the new construction, and feel much safer for it.
Physical Description
The obelisk is 100 foot tall exactly, and is built on a granite base. It is engraved with runes and capped with gold. Each month, on the night of the full moon, the runes glow a light blue colour and a faint howling can be heard coming from the stone.
History
Prior to the construction of Lycan’s Spire, people would be found mauled in their homes every full moon. Public opinion was that a Werewolf was responsible for the killings, but rather than hiring hunters the village leaders instead commissioned the construction of the monolith. The construction took a little over a month, and wizards were hired to add the necessary enchantments to protect against Lycanthropes. Rumour has it that everyone involved in construction mysteriously vanished shortly after completion, although the village leaders dismiss these rumours, stating that the workers simply returned to their homes in nearby villages.
The Lycanthrope’s Curse
Ever since the construction of Lycan’s Spire, the attacks on townsfolk have ceased. The Werewolf was never caught however, and still walks through the village that they once terrorised. Dozens of rumours circulate the village about the possible identity of the Lycanthrope, but the most popular is that the son of the village chief is the one afflicted by the curse. Perhaps this is why the spire was built, so that the Werewolf would not need to be hunted down and killed.
